Pure Charcoal (2 bags)
Storage Bag for Charcoal
Burns clean. Lasts long.
Made from dense, natural hardwood, this lump charcoal burns steadily and efficiently, giving you long cooking times with minimal refuelling. Less topping up, more time cooking — whether you’re grilling hot or cooking low and slow.
100% natural. No compromises
No additives, no accelerants, no chemical binders. Just pure charcoal made from responsibly sourced wood. That means clean combustion, predictable heat, and nothing unwanted coming between your fire and your food.
Neutral heat. Pure taste
This charcoal delivers consistent heat without overpowering your ingredients. It enhances what you cook rather than masking it — letting meat, fish, vegetables, and smoke wood do the talking.

Looft Lighter 2 electric lighter
The Looft Lighter II is the fastest, safest and cleanest way to light your barbecue. It ignites your charcoal using only superheated air. NO gas, NO flame and NO lighter fluid required.
How Looft Lighter works
Lighting - Place charcoal in the Big Green Egg. Touch it with the tip of the Looft Lighter and press the button.
Pull back slightly - When sparks or embers appear, pull the Looft Lighter back a few centimetres. This allows the heat to spread more effectively and take effect.
Hit the spot - Hold the Looft lighter in the same spot for about 60 seconds.

Fuel & Fire — Big Green Egg
A practical journey from buying to cooking to care
What sort of fuel should I use with the Big Green Egg?
Use 100% natural lump hardwood charcoal (no chemical additives, no briquettes)
Why shouldn’t I use briquettes (or lighter-fluid briquettes)?
Because briquettes often contain additives, produce more ash, reduce air flow and impair temperature control — and can negatively affect flavour and the ceramic interior.
How much charcoal should I use (how full do I fill the fire box)?
The recommended practice is to fill the firebox to the top (to the rim of the fire basket) for each new cooking session.
Can I reuse leftover charcoal from a previous session?
Yes — if the charcoal is still in good chunks and the ash or small pieces haven’t obstructed air flow. Before a new session you should clear out ash and then top up with fresh fuel.
How do I top up charcoal during a long cook?
If you’re doing a very long cook (many hours) you can add more charcoal mid-cook. The correct method: gently slide hot coals aside, add fresh fuel to the other side so the fire spreads naturally — don’t dump fresh charcoal on top of blazing fuel.
How long will one full load of lump charcoal last?
For low & slow (≈225 °F/≈110 °C) you might get 10-18 hours from a full load in a properly set up BGE. For high-temperature direct grilling (≈500 °F/≈260 °C) the burn time is much shorter (2-4 hours).
Does fuel quality affect flavour?
Yes. Using a poor fuel (additive-rich briquettes, damp charcoal, small/crumbly pieces) can impart off-flavours, more smoke, more ash and inconsistent cooking results.
What about wood chunks or wood chips — can I use those?
Yes — you can add wood chunks or chips in addition to lump charcoal for flavour/smoke. But they shouldn’t replace the charcoal base; the BGE is designed primarily for charcoal heat.
How should I store charcoal so it remains good?
Keep it dry, protected from rain and humidity. Damp charcoal will burn poorly and reduce the BGE’s temperature performance.
What happens if there are too many small charcoal pieces or lots of ash built up in the firebox?
Small pieces and excessive ash can obstruct airflow and reduce performance (harder to get up to temp, less efficient burning). It’s good practice to remove fine debris and ash before each session.
Can I light my EGG with lighter fluid?
Generally no. The manufacturer emphasises natural starters and warns against chemical accelerants, since the ceramic absorbs flavour, and chemicals can taint food.
Is there any reason to use logs or big pieces of wood instead of charcoal?
While some might experiment, the consensus is that the BGE is optimised for lump charcoal. Using large logs or wood chunks as the main fuel can complicate temperature control and airflow.
Will using poor fuel affect my warranty or the lifespan of my Big Green Egg?
The manufacturer links correct fuel (natural lump charcoal) with optimal operation; using inappropriate fuel (e.g., briquettes with lots of ash) may lead to performance issues or increased maintenance.
How does fuel choice influence temperature control?
Because temperature in the BGE is primarily controlled by airflow and fuel base, using clean-burning natural lump charcoal helps deliver consistent temperatures. Poor fuel (lots of ash, low burn) makes control harder.
If I’m doing a very long low-and-slow cook (e.g., brisket or pulled pork) how should I think about fuel?
Use a full load of good lump charcoal, ensure ash is cleared, set up your indirect configuration (e.g., convEGGtor) for airflow, and you often won’t need to add much (if any) fuel during the cook. Forums confirm that with good fuel and low airflow settings a long cook can be done without topping up.
